Cemetery Wil – central spiral wall
1997-1998, Wil CH
Constructor Stadt Wil bei St. Gallen CH
Architect Engeler Freiraumplanung, Wil CH
Builder Lehm Ton Erde Martin Rauch, Schlins A

The ornament of the curling and coasting line is more of a symbol of the dynamics of life, the change of being and passing off. On the hill in the Wiler cemetery two rammned earth walls, swelling up and down in height, merge together. They create a form of a volute ribbon, a spatial-timely experience in its shape. Rauch succeeded in making a statement that is appropriate to the occasion and to the material, it comes close to the best examples of the land art or clinker monuments done by Per Kirkeby. The fist wall starts off, very shallow, at the highest point of the property and rises analogically to the gradient to the center of the 3m high wall. The second wall starts at the center, at the full height of the first wall, and grows to its full height towards the base of the hill.
