Cardinal Schwarzenberg House
In the historic ensemble on Kapitelplatz, the Kardinal-Schwarzenberg-Haus was redesigned as a modern education and archive center for the diocese of Salzburg. The building, once the granary of the cathedral chapter, was carefully renovated and given modern uses for archives, music and meetings.
Rammed earth walls play an important role in the interior: the prefabricated elements form a solid, non-load-bearing inner skin with excellent heat-storing properties. The approximately 77m² clay surface ensures a pleasant indoor climate and lends the room material authenticity and tranquillity.
Close collaboration between architecture, design and execution has resulted in an example of the successful combination of historic buildings and sustainable clay construction – a place that brings together tradition and contemporary spatial culture.
