House of Architecture: Erosion
Clay, silt, sand, gravel and rubble are the result of a natural process that shapes landscapes. For decades, Martin Rauch has dedicated himself to clay as a building material with great formal clarity and without sentimentality – a material that fulfills ecological and building biology criteria like no other.
His aim is to use the rammed earth technique to transform the earth material, which is available almost everywhere, into architecture that leaves no wounds. Rather, his work sees itself as a transformation of the earth into habitable structures – embedded in a consistent circular thinking. His house in Vorarlberg impressively demonstrates how convincingly this can be achieved.
The exhibition in the House of Architecture focuses on clay as a material. It makes it tangible and shows how the potential of earth building can be used today with precision craftsmanship and contemporary design – against the backdrop of ecological responsibility and technical feasibility.
