Chancel of Worms Cathedral
As a calming counter-accent to the baroque dynamics of the church interior, the choir room was deliberately furnished with simply designed liturgical elements – an expression of mindfulness and inner contemplation. In the spirit of the Pope’s encyclical “Laudato Si” – with its call for social ethics and responsibility towards creation – only local materials were used, refined by human labor and craftsmanship.
A longing for places of silence and peace, for contemplation, simplicity and security is palpable. One material that corresponds to this longing and radiates elementary security is earth, clay. Beginning and end, a cycle – the most modest of all building materials, which supports us, nourishes us and for which we bear responsibility.
It was a central concern of both the planners and the congregation that the altar should be built together with the congregation. The process strengthened the sense of community and became a special symbol of a living church.
