Hospital Chapel Elisabethinen
The Elisabethinen Chapel in Graz offers patients and relatives a place of silence – a space for retreat, contemplation, prayer, petition and thanksgiving. The architectural space itself carries this message: the design concept is based on radical reduction. The materiality of the rammed earth – on the walls, floor and in the liturgical elements – plays a central role.
The 6m long and almost 3m high altar wall consists of a rammed earth facing. The integrated tabernacle and candlelight set specific accents. Earth from five monasteries and religious hospitals of the Elisabethines was symbolically incorporated into the clay mixture of the ambo and altar.
