Cinema Sil Plaz
Located in the centre of Ilanz, an informal cultural centre was created in an old forge. The raw qualities of the blacksmith’s workshop were preserved when it was converted into a bar with a stage. In the heart of the building is the cinema hall which has been given a massive yet noble character through its rammed earth walls.
The material was quarried nearby and gives the space a reference to the local context in its mass. The commitment of the local film club increased the members’ affinity for the project and was able to reduce some construction costs. The tranquillity radiated by the rammed earth emphasises the moving images as if with a passepartout. The rounded corners break up the strictness of the geometry and thus support the involvement in a fictional world. In December 2010 the project was awarded The Golden Rabbit, first prize by Swiss architectural magazine Hochparterre in the category architecture. The jury appreciated the intensity of the project with its minimal but highly precise measures, which created something rich and completely new.
