The exhibition Closer to Nature: Building with Mushroom, Tree, Clay took place at the Berlinische Galerie from 16.02. to 14.10.2024. The exhibition reflected on the tension between architecture and nature, as finite resources and the growing need for space present an unavoidable dilemma. The construction industry’s outsized contribution to this problem raises the question: Is building in harmony with nature possible?
The rammed earth installation “Compacted Earth” refers to the Chapel of Reconciliation in Berlin, one of Martin Rauch’s earliest projects. The two-part, curved monoliths with smooth inner surfaces and vertically structured outer surfaces reflect the inner and outer skin of the chapel. The walk-in installation makes the texture of the clay tangible. Almost a quarter of a century later, it bears witness to the renewal and enduring appeal of European adobe construction.
