Columbarium church St. Elisabeth
The conversion of St. Elisabeth Church in Bremen follows on from a centuries-old tradition: burial in the immediate vicinity of a sacred place. The church, which was built in 1968 in the Hastedt district, was carefully converted into a columbarium between 2019 and 2020.
Three groups of urn walls, made of rammed earth, fit harmoniously around the largely preserved chancel. With their polygonal floor plans, gently sloping surfaces and rounded corners, the structures make reference to the architectural language of the existing church. Up to 1,200 urns find their place in the clay walls – embedded in a space of silence and remembrance.
