Rauch workshop & studio

The workshop for ceramics and clay construction is a demonstration and test building for various clay construction techniques. It was planned in collaboration with the architect Robert Felber, while Martin Rauch and his team carried out the work themselves. The foundations and basement walls were made of reinforced concrete. A lightweight metal construction was erected on top.

It supports a south-facing wooden roof, covered with a layer of grass. The 55 cm thick, 4 m high outer walls were raised on three sides under the cantilevered canopy using the rammed earth technique. The earth excavated for the cellar was used as the material. The clay was sieved, mixed with approx. 10% brick chippings and mechanically compacted in formwork. The fourth exterior wall was designed as a lightweight timber and glass structure. Partially filled with solar panels and Trombe walls, it opens the building to the sun like a comb and interlocks it with the adjoining covered work terrace.
