Residential building Flims
The new building in the middle of the old village center of Flims occupies the space of the previous building with all its projections and recesses and thus ensures the continued existence of the established village structure. The choice of natural materials and the formulation of the details have enabled the building to be integrated into its time and place. The sculptural rammed earth core made from locally sourced clay forms the proverbial focal point of the timber construction.
It contains a bright space with staggered staircases flanked by parapets made of clay. Precisely placed openings bring light into the deep building volume, create unexpected visual references and integrate the living space across all three storeys. The haptic structure of the clay supports the deliberate use of light to a particular degree, and its warm surface is significant for the role of the staircase as the heart of the house.
