Space for birth & senses
Light, smell, color, temperature and materiality shape our sensory perception. The Room for Birth & Senses is a walk-in body made of clay – a place that makes it possible to experience how much space and surroundings influence birth and health. The object invites you to focus your attention on your own senses. It enables a variety of birthing postures, encourages movement and uses gravity as a natural support in the birthing process: standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, hanging – the space follows the body.
As part of an artistic research project, the prototype is an expression of a larger vision: spaces should not disturb the body’s processes, but accompany and strengthen them. Architecture becomes a medium for holistic awareness – physiologically effective, designed to be regenerative, built with the right materials.
The idea comes from Anka Dür, architect, midwife-to-be and founding member of IG Geburtskultur a-z. In collaboration with Anna Heringer, Martin Rauch and Sabrina Summer, a powerful space for a new birth culture was created – built from earth, supported by community. The prototype serves as a place of experience for workshops, mediation and birth rituals.
The Space for Birth and Senses was created in spring 2020 as an external part of the exhibition geburtskultur. vom gebären und geboren werden.
