Lehm Ton Erde office building
The three-storey office building, constructed from load-bearing rammed earth and connected directly to the production hall, has grown over the past six years with plenty of dedication and perseverance, as well as a great deal of hands-on effort. Today, it brings together the diverse activities of Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH under one roof.
In one room, construction sites are planned and coordinated, while prefabricated components are produced next door and new production techniques are tested and refined. In between, students diligently polish their Dorodango spheres. Planning, production, workshops and research are integrated here, creating real synergies and encouraging the transfer of knowledge. Throughout the building, earth can be experienced in (almost) all its forms: as solid rammed earth walls and wall linings; as clay plaster; as a rammed earth floor and loose infill; in the casein finish on timber surfaces; and as a timber–earth composite slab, which is a further development of the ceiling system first realised in the Hortus project. Local, vapour-permeable materials were consistently prioritised out of conviction and respect for the location.
The office serves as both an experimental field and a showcase for our own craftsmanship and that of local partners. Visible throughout are rammed earth walls and floors, ornamental tiles, custom-made lights by Karak, a casein floor developed in collaboration with David Ledetzky and on-site, hand-woven shading elements by Emmanuel Heringer. In short, this is a building that demonstrates what can happen when many hands, curious minds and a shared ambition come together. Or, to put it differently: it’s amazing what you can build with a little help from friends.
