Light, smell, colour, temperature, materials, and surfaces play a vital part in perception. The “Room for Birth and Senses” is an adobe structure, inside which you can experience the effect of space and environment on birthing and health.

The art object invites visitors to direct their attention towards their senses. There are different birthing positions. You can give them a try. A woman bringing a child into the world will make use of the gravitational force. Standing upright, walking, sitting, kneeling or moving facilitate the birthing process.

The “Room for Birth and Senses” is both an art project and part of a wider vision, sowing the seeds for a new and holistic awareness, allowing spaces and materials to promote regenerative processes.

Behind this prototype stands Anka Dür’s conceptual idea. The young architect and midwife-to-be developed a concept idea of a contemporary maternity home in hospital proximity. The prototype for a new kind of birthing space was designed in cooperation with Anna Heringer, Martin Rauch and Sabrina Summer. A room where workshops, events and birthing rituals will take place.

The „Room for Birth and Senses“ was created in spring 2020 as an outdoor feature of the exhibition „birthculture. giving birth and being born“, commissioned by the Frauenmuseum Hittisau.
