The rammed earth pavilion was planned and built by students of ETH Zurich in collaboration with Gian Salis and Martin Rauch. It is located in the protected Steinerschen Garten at ETH Hönggerberg since 2014. Three interlocking arched discs were formed from 19 prefabricated elements, which support six vaults and thus form a small, five-metre-high pavilion. The statically optimised design in combination with the prefabrication of elements enabled the construction of load-bearing vaults made of unreinforced rammed earth. The roof is designed as a metal skin and protects the clay pavilion from rain. Rammed-in layers of trass lime protect the directly weathered clay surfaces from progressive erosion.
