Earthwall
Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin
Berlin, Germany, 2000
Concept
Olafur Eliasson
Builder
Martin Rauch

The first project in cooperation with the artist Olafur Eliasson realized Martin Rauch in the rooms of the Berlin national gallery in the Hamburg Trainstation. Being inspired by the rammed earth walls in the gardens of Kienast, Vogt&Partner, Eliasson invited Martin Rauch to do the installation of a rammed earth wall within the shown presentation. The 80m long, 100t heavy wall was constructed in an advancing mould, in 5 stages. The unfiltered earth came in the main part from the immediate surroundings. The excavation pit was part of the exhibition and was left uncovered and was marked in its course. The material was returned to the pit after the exhibit ended.
